Find Your Family's New Best Friend at With Love Super Adoption Day |
Posted By Paige Wolf,

|
Animal advocacy groups, pet professionals, and hundreds of adoptable
animals will come together for With Love Super Adoption Day, May 22, 10 a.m. – 4
p.m. at the Piazza
at Schmidts (2nd and Germantown Ave.) Hosted by Citizens for a
No-Kill Philadelphia, this fundraising and awareness event will bring
together several animal welfare and rescue groups in the Philadelphia
area along with live music, food, and vendors selling unique products
for people and pets. With Love Super Adoption Day will be one of the
largest adoption events nationwide.
Participants and sponsors include the Pennsylvania Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PSPCA), Philadelphia Animal Welfare
Society (PAWS), Pinups for Pitbulls, Philadoptables, Rat Chick Rat
Rescue, Blind Dog Rescue Alliance, The Monster Minders, Greater Philly
Tails, Morris Animal Refuge, The Philadelphia Greyhound Connection, City
Kitties, Canine Cancer Research Foundation, Adopt a Boxer Rescue,
Unchained Dogs, Opportunity Barks, Big Green Earth Store,
ThePhillyDog.com, Skeeter Dog Equipment, My PHL17, and Radio 104.5 FM.
The event will be emceed by 104.5 FM’s Wendy Rollins.
Citizens for a No-Kill Philadelphia is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization
comprised of taxpayers and pet lovers who are committed to saving all
healthy and treatable companion animals in Philadelphia shelters. Using
political advocacy, grassroots efforts and humane education, CNKP works
with our elected officials, other non-profit groups and the public to
raise awareness about creating No-Kill model that will save the lives of
the 10,000+ cats, dogs and small animals that die each year in
Philadelphia shelters because of overpopulation.
Every year, more than 30,000 animals turn up at city shelters, and more
than one third don’t make it out alive. In search of a solution,
Philadelphia residents banded together to promote and lead the local
No-Kill movement. A No-Kill community is one where all healthy and
treatable animals are saved. Major components of a No-Kill community
include pet retention programs, adoption programs, trap-neuter-return
programs, and large-scale, low-cost spay/neuter programs. Several major
cities have made great strides towards No-Kill, a movement that makes
lifesaving a priority.
The group focuses on prevention measures such as high-volume
spay/neuter. Once animal control is less burdened and more
cost-efficient, it will free up more resources for humane care. With a
new citizen-based No-Kill model, they aim to tap into the estimated $5
million funneled out of Philadelphia each year to national animal
welfare agencies. A law mandating No-Kill would enable to achieve their
mission, regardless of who has the animal welfare contact. A sustainable
organizational model to achieve No-Kill status in Philadelphia can then
be exported to other cities for the same goal.
CNKP’s activities include organizing a petition drive to collect 10,000
signatures in support of No-Kill, running a humane education program to
teach Philadelphia’s youth about caring and compassion for animals, and
participating in various outreach events. For more information about
Citizens for a No-Kill Philadelphia, please visit www.phillynokill.org.

Cute Organic Baby Clothes |
Posted By Paige Wolf,
Sunday, April 04, 2010
|
I can barely keep up with all
the adorable, organic baby clothes popping up on the market. Here are a couple
of my favorites.
My favorite thing about
sustainable kids clothes brand Hanna Andersson – besides the frequent sales and
coupon codes – is the fact that the pajamas zip up, eliminating the dozens of
snaps!
Absea baby blends
70% natural silk with 30% organic cotton for incredibly soft, beautiful little washables. The company specializes in newborn
sizes up to 24 months, and the mother-daughter homegrown company wraps and
ships all naturals in recycled materials.
Kicky
Pants is an eco-friendly 100 percent certified organic bamboo
children’s clothing line, available locally at Born Yesterday and Revelations
Boutique.
Free
of dyes and using only certified cotton grown in fields that are free of
pesticides, all of the Simply Chickie Little Chickie Wear products are made in the U.S. and
feature whimsical designs with adorable phrases like "May Contain Peanut” and "I'm Going to Run with Scissors!”
My Earth
Too! is a line of 100%
organic cotton apparel for women and children that donates a portion of its
proceeds to the Chuckie Goodnight Foundation For The Environment, a non-profit
organization that provides environmental education for children and preserves
green space. My Earth Too is available at JC Penny and Kohls.
Hessnatur, one of the largest organic apparel companies in Europe launched
in the US last year. Hessnatur creates 100% organic, toxin-free clothing
for babies. For newborns with particularly sensitive skin, hessnatur has
created styles using only unbleached, un-dyed fabrics. Details like flat seams,
waists and cuffs that grow with the baby, and functional construction that
doesn’t inhibit movement, make the clothing worth a still affordable price.
Satsuma Designs creates
organic products for babies and home. Their debut collection features bamboo, a
naturally antibacterial, organic and UV resistant material great for keeping
children cozy and all natural.

When you can't
buy local, buying online is a great option. There are so many wonderful Web
sites that offer an array of fabulous green products and also utilize
eco-friendly packaging and shipping practices. Ordering online also reduces the
fuel from shopping trips, as those UPS trucks are simply multi-tasking as they
pass your house along their regular route!
For Fashion and Beauty:
Globalgirlfriend.com sells
only affordable, women-made, fair-trade, eco-friendly goods. The site directs
the charity royalty from each purchase to the Campaign for Female Education, a
nonprofit organization dedicated to eradicating poverty in Africa through the
education of girls and the empowerment of young women.
Thegreenloop.com offers sustainable
style for men and women including Good Society denim and casual fashions by
Edun and Green Label Organic.
Shop Envi carries organic and
eco-friendly clothing from hottest green brands like Bahar Shahpar, Doie,
Loomstate, and Linda Loudermilk.
Spirit Beauty Lounge is the
only carbon-neutral online boutique specializing in luxury green, organic and
cruelty-free beauty and lifestyle products. Spirit Beauty Lounge also carries
recycled and vintage jewelry and handbags, hard-to-find European skincare
lines, and non-toxic household cleaning products.
Find
salon and spa-tested natural, organic hair and skin care at jujuorganics, the retail site for the
Philadelphia salon and spa.
For
Everything Under The Sun:
WorldofGood.comby eBay brings together
thousands of "People Positive” and "Eco Positive” sellers and
products all in one place. Respected, independent organizations verify the
positive impact of every product, and the story behind each product helps you
understand how your purchases impact the world.
Econsciousmarket.com is another huge
green shopping site which sells ecologically and socially responsible products
donates up to 10% of every purchase to non-profit organizations. The
marketplace offers educational information on every company on the site, which
highlights how each company is taking responsibility both ecologically and
socially.
Nimli is an online marketplace devoted to
providing natural, organic, and sustainable lifestyle products from English
Retreads bags and Oeuf cribs to fashions by Sublet and Ecoganik. Nimli is one
of the most environmentally mindful retailers due to their practice and policy
that requires all designers to ship their products directly to customers,
eliminating the unnecessary step of shipping items to a warehouse for future

Ways to Green your Reading |
Posted By Paige Wolf,
Tuesday, February 16, 2010
|
One of my favorite times of day is the hour after my baby goes to sleep, when I take some time to turn off ad read a good book.
With the launch of the Kindle and Ipad, the trend in electronic reading is a great way to cut down on paper books, while still giving money to well deserving authors.
But if you can't afford one of those pricey devices, a great way to recycle your reading material
and find something new without spending a dime is the "book swap” at
TBar. This super-cute tea shop and café keeps a cabinet full of reading
materials meant to be swamped out and shared, without the need for a library
card.
If you want to make some fast cash for your
stash of college text books and chick lit, CKYBooks
gives instant quotes and free shipping for buying your book collection. The
books are then resold or donated, always finding a happy new home.
There are also great swapping sites like Paperbackswap and trading options on one of my favorite sites, Goodreads.
When you do purchase a new book, local company Eco-Libris,
allows people to "balance out" their book purchases by paying to
plant a tree. The trees, which cost one dollar per book, are planted where they
provide value for both the environment and the local communities. For each
book, you receive the Eco-Libris sticker, made from recycled paper and designed
to put on the cover of the books you balance out to show your commitment to
sustainability and responsible use of natural resources.

Germaphobe plus ecomaniac = EO |
Posted By Paige Wolf,
Tuesday, February 09, 2010
|
Being a germaphobe and an ecomaniac tend to not mix. It sometimes
takes a while to accept the fact that things needn’t smell like bleach to be
"clean,” and to get used to reusing sponges and relying on lemons and baking soda to kill germs.
EO Products full line of hand sanitizers include wipes, gels and
sprays all made with Organic Alcohol. EO Hand Sanitizers meet and exceed FDA
requirements and are an organic plant-based alternative to harsh chemical
laden hand sanitizers.
The sanitizing wipes are perfect to take with you on the go, and
EO hand soaps come in delicious scents like chocolate mint and French lavender.
EO is a family owned and operated, certified organic
manufacturer of personal care products using the highest grade natural and
certified organic ingredients. Available at Whole Foods, stock up on this stuff to prepare for the rest of the dreaded flu season.

from appearing.
