"OH NOhawk"

Posted By Jaimee McClellan (Matz), Sunday, April 25, 2010
Updated: Sunday, April 25, 2010

So, I've been on hiatus ~ or so it seems...not really.  I've just been incredibly busy the past few weeks with job #1, job #2, filling orders for my own business and that whole "mommy" thing I do too.  Sometimes, it can seem a tad overwhelming until you get a day like this when you realize all you needed was a good laugh!

Let me set things up for you first.  My 6 year old & husband (who sometimes ~or  most times :) ~ acts like a 6 year old) have been harping on "MEAN OL' MOMMY" to let the wee one have a mohawk but  I just couldn't part with my little boy turning into a KID!

But I could handle the "Mean Mom" label no more and decided it was time for me move on and let the little guy grow up a bit.  It's only hair after all and it will grow back.  So, it was time for a haircut this week and before he could ask (yet again), I said, "Hey buddy, how 'bout a mohawk?"  You shouldn't seen the size of his eyes as he said "YES!" in an all too grown up "cool" voice.  I grabbed the clippers (now I've been cutting hair for a while, it's not like I went at it blindly) and got to work.  The first go around he looked in the mirror and said "NOT SHORT ENOUGH MOM...it doesn't look like a real mohawk!"  So, I gave it another go making the sides a little shorter and a little shorter until it looked perfect.  The whole time, he could hardly contain himself just dying to look in the mirror again.  This time though, there was a completely different reaction...and I sooo wish I had the video camera rolling.  He ran to the mirror and burst into tears begging for his hair back.

I just couldn't help but burst out laughing...who's cool now?!

He's since decided he likes it especially since you can see his "awesome scar" from stitches he had a few years back.  Apparently old war wounds are still cool.

Oh Baby!

Posted By Jaimee McClellan (Matz), Friday, April 09, 2010

SO...God giveth and God taketh away!

That was never more clear to me than today.

This morning began with sadness as me & the mister sent our little guy off to school to then go to a funeral.

The viewing and mass went as planned and was lovely as could be expected and THEN the craziness began.

As we followed in the procession, the traffic began to build.

(me thinking to myself...hmmm, aren't we allowed to go through all the lights and stuff?)  WELL, that wasn't the problem at all.   It just so happened that my Sister-in-Law's water broke and they stopped the procession to switch cars and head to the hospital.

I am now the proud Auntie of Summer Maya!

Needless to say, the day ended with tears of JOY.

YUMMO

Posted By Jaimee McClellan (Matz), Thursday, April 01, 2010

Seriously, I'm NOT the recipe blogging type but I make this Bread Pudding on a weekly basis and share with all my neighbors who now have requested the recipe.

It's definitely worth it!!!

BUTTERSCOTCH BREAD PUDDING

(adapted/altered from a 1973 Better Crocker:  Dinner for Two recipe)

1 cup soft bread cubes (or the heels of a loaf of bread seems to be just enough...who ever eats the ends anyway?!)

1 egg

1 tablespoon melted butter

2/3 cup milk (or heavy cream makes it even better)

3 tablespoons brown sugar

1 teaspoon cinnamon

dash of salt

1/3 cup raisins/craisins/or whatever fruit floats your boat

...

Heat oven to 350

  1. Place bread cubes into a buttered 2 1/2 cup casserole dish.
  2. Beat egg, stir in butter, milk, brown sugar, cinnamon & raisins.
  3. Pour mixture over bread.
  4. sprinkle a mixture of 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon & 1 tablespoon sugar on top and bake for approx. 40-50 min.

makes 2 servings ~ or ONE heeping Modern Classics Mama serving :)

Silent Auction for THE RELAY FOR LIFE

Posted By Jaimee McClellan (Matz), Friday, March 26, 2010
Updated: Friday, March 26, 2010
A while back, I got a lovely email for Laura of Laura Odom Photography (and a past Modern Classics: Kids client) asking if I'd be interested in donating some items for their Silent Auction.  The auction is to help raise money for the National Cancer Society and THE RELAY FOR LIFE.

Well, the auction is now LIVE...although, it's a rather short running.  JUST ONE DAY & today is the final day for bidding!  I'm ashamed to say, not a SINGLE bid yet!

So, if you're in the market for some cute goodies for the kiddies, here's what's up for grabs...AND it's for a GREAT cause!

A Little Friday Fun

Posted By Jaimee McClellan (Matz), Friday, March 26, 2010

So, I just met Amanda in the Etsy Forums and I'm sure glad I did. Her shop (StillInMotion) is amazing AND might I add she's self-taught too!
Wow, what an eye this gal has.

Now, I adore all the shots in her shop but I'm quite partial to the "kitchy-er" ones. They're just so FUN!

Which one is your favorite?

Well, if you're our lucky winner, it could be yours!
Amanda is offering a FREE 5x7 of your choice.
So, get on over there and take a peek.

A Site to See at the Philly Zoo

Posted By Jaimee McClellan (Matz), Wednesday, March 24, 2010

Many thanks to a dear friend for sharing the wealth...the wealth being her Philly Zoo membership passes.  My little guy and I were more than happy to tag along when we got the offer.  We had the most beautiful day for it too.  That teacher conferencing couldn't have fallen on a better week.  The kids had half days and plenty of time to play in the sun at the Zoo!

We only had a few hours to take it all in but it was more than enough to see with our impeccable timing.  Seems as though, 1:00pm is "GO-ing" time, if you catch my drift.  As the little girls groaned with disgust, all our little boys were laughing and "AWESOME-ing" as we watched the tortoises, gorillas & tigers ~ OH MY!.  I'll spare you the details but I'll will tell you...it was a SITE to see!

Here are some of the more pleasant photos

...

Oh!!!  And HOW could I forget the hilarious Orangutans...one with a blanket on his head and the other a cardboard box!

Too funny!!!

A Day with Picasso

Posted By Jaimee McClellan (Matz), Thursday, March 18, 2010

So this past weekend, I treated the family (mainly myself) to a trip to the Philadelphia Art Museum to see the Picasso exhibit. If you live in the Philly area, you know the weather wasn't exactly the most condusive for any kind of travel whatsoever. Nevertheless, we braved the elements (especially for the price of the tickets...we were going no matter what!).

We made it there after countless flooding/mudslide/fallen tree/St. Patty's Parade detours with just minutes to spare before our time slot was closed. Kevin drop me & the little guy off mid-traffic with umbrellas flying inside out and torrential sideways rain. By the time we checked our coats and picked up our tickets, we basically had to book-it up the stairs to the exhibit. Trying to compose myself and get back into "Museum Standard Status", we dried off and caught our breath before entering. Finn was extremely well-behaved and one of the few kiddos there. Of course, I was worried ~ not knowing how much a 6 year old would tolerate the situation. He was remarkably interested and studied each piece. UNTIL, *ring ring ring* ~ YES, it was MY phone!!! I'm NEVER the one with poor cell phone etiquette...I'm overly prepared, a painstakingly stickler for rules and MY phone rang. The glares were enough to kill...how humiliating! Other than that the trip was phenomenal and so inspiring. It's nice to know there still is an artist underneath this Mommy Persona. Unfortunately, no photos were permitted in the exhibit but I can tell you from the Picasso's (The Three Musicians - which is a LOT larger than I had anticipated) to Miro, Braque, Dali...it was amazing. The rest of our visit was cut a little short due to a previous promise we had made Finn to go roller skating afterwards. So, I didn't make it to the European Painter's Gallery...no Canaletto ~ Boo Hoo! :( I'm promised myself I will make it a point to visit more often this year, so...next time!

Now for the Roller skating bit! I certainly was a little apprehensive about the whole ordeal considering the last time I roller skated was probably about 20+ years ago....and mind you, I wasn't good then either. I strapped on a pair of skates and OH BOY, I'm sure I was a site to see. I'm really confused though because I can ice skate rather well. Roller skating not so much! Then, topping it with the constant Motherly worries of my little boy falling and losing teeth or needing stitches just made it worse. Then, it happened!!! As I turned to help Finn up after falling, I completely ATE IT! The full "arms flailing, legs everywhere and BAM right on my bum. Humiliation moment #2 for the day...but I was pleased to laugh it off with the other 10 people chuckling at my expense...my hubby & Finn included! Thank goodness there aren't any photos of that. All in all, it was a GREAT day!

*Today we're headed to the Philadelphia Zoo with some friends. Let's see what kind of trouble I can get in there :) *

Monday's Cup of Inspiration

Posted By Jaimee McClellan (Matz), Monday, March 15, 2010
Updated: Monday, March 15, 2010

I like to start my week on a positive note, a note of inspiration...that's why I created Mosaic Monday (a spin-off idea from the POE Team's a.k.a Photographer's of Etsy)  It gives me a chance to clear my mind and focus on the beauty of lifes little gifts captured so elegantly through the eyes of these talented photographers.  Like here at MomSpace, I'm happy to be a member of such a team!

Thanks to you both for all of your support & inspiration!

Happy Mosaic Monday!

Blessings ~ ajawin
